Meet Acorn and Ember
October brings glowing leaves, falling acorns and earlier evenings. But the garden is far from asleep. Some seeds wake quickly, some plants keep growing through the cold, and some flowers wait beneath the earth until spring.
The October Little Sprouts Garden Box invites children aged 3 to 9 to explore this turning point in the year through growing, making, nature discovery and an original story inspired by Irish folklore and Samhain.
What’s inside the October box?
-
Three things to grow: organic chickpeas to sprout, winter purslane to sow and crocus corms to plant for spring
-
Three hands-on activities: make a clay and twig Woodland Guardian, weave a Conker Spiderweb and create a Hearth Keeper’s Broomstick
-
An original illustrated story: The Keeper of the Last Ember
-
Two seasonal recipes: Hearth Spark Chickpea Toast and Winter Star Pinwheels
- Growing guides, nature prompts and everything you need to follow the October adventure
Some everyday items and natural materials such as a jar or bowl, twigs, leaves and a conker, may need to be gathered at home. Recipe ingredients are not included.
An October journey, not just a box of activities
Every part of Acorn and Ember connects to one seasonal story: even as the days grow darker, small sparks of life are still glowing.
Children can watch chickpeas begin to sprout, care for winter purslane and plant crocus corms that will wait beneath the soil until spring. Along the way, they’ll make, notice and explore, then share a story and seasonal food together.
There’s no pressure to finish everything at once. Choose one activity for a quiet afternoon, explore the box over a weekend or return to it throughout the month.

- Designed for gardens, balconies and windowsills
- Easy to enjoy indoors when the Irish weather has other ideas
- Rooted in seasonal nature and Irish folklore
- Created to encourage curiosity rather than perfect results
A little clue…
Something ancient stirs in October.
The Irish have known this for thousands of years. That this month holds a particular kind of magic. That the boundary between the ordinary world and something older and wilder grows thin.
Your October box was made for exactly that feeling.
What will your little explorer find inside?
