What to Plant in May

May 10, 2016 | What to Plant

As May blooms into its full splendor, it’s the perfect time to engage your children in the planting process. It not only fosters a love for nature but also provides invaluable lessons in responsibility and stewardship. Below are a few recommendations for planting with your little sprouts this May.

Carrots

Carrots are a fantastic, easy-to-grow crop to raise from seed. Sow into shallow drills of well-prepared, soil, or in pots.

Rocket

Rocket is a quick-growing crop that takes up little space. Perfect for pots or on the surface of moist, multi-purpose compost.

Cornflower

May is the final month to sow cornflowers. They look particularly impressive when planted with other meadow plants, such as corn poppies.

Sunflowers

Sunflower seeds can be sown directly outside now or into pots. You may need to stake particularly tall varieties.

Runner Beans

French beans and runner beans can be sown directly outside now. Support climbing beans with a teepee of canes.
